Race 3 24/05/09 - and what a race!
Posted By admin on May 24, 2009
Well the wind gods delivered, nearly on time, but in the end near perfect conditons. From a start line with 1knot SW seeing all the 15 boats crawl over the line to 10 minutes later having 8 knots and beautifull conditions, warm sun, wind and blue seas and our best turnout yet of 15 boats.
This again confirms the CDMYC format as the most succesfull on the Island for putting boats on the water in races.
After an abscence from the last race the Castletown 1, Amy, looked to re-establish itself at the front of the fleet as the leading 1 design, however stiff competion from last weeks winner Wild Wave with JQ snr at the helm, the Delta of JQ jnr with brother David as crew holidaying from Australia (better known in his younger days as the iron man of the Southerners hockey team defence, pass him and the next stop was casualty and yes i have first hand experince of that!!) the Laser 2 of Ben Hellowell having it’s first outing and the 1 design Rosie B with that well known raconteur and all round humorist Mike Kneale as crew.
Final positions on the water saw the laser of JC first across the line, closely followed by the Delta of JQ jnr, Ben in the Laser 2 and then the ever present 1 design of Brian breathing down everyones neck. Full results after handicap’s applied are posted on the results page. Full credit to young Ben Hellowell in the laser II finishing 3rd on the water and keeping ahead of the 1 designs with their high aspect rig, shame about the handicap. There were other strong performances from Jim Edge in the leisure 17 finishing in an excellent 4th on handicap, who could be one of the dark horses going forward, Keith in the 1 design finishing third, he also could be a contender once his crew (MJK) get a bit more experience.
However there’s always excuses and the top “feeble excuse of the day” goes to Wild Waves crew who was heard to say (after they won last week) “the boat just wouldn’t go today” yes Ron and if you remember back to your teaching days that ranks alongside the dog eat my homework!
Brilliant to see the ranks of the visiting Spaniards swelling with the Moody 27 Karlin of Kip keeping the numbers up, considering we still have upwards of 5 regulars still to come to the line it could become crowded in weeks to come.
Thank as ever to OOD John Moon and Mark for Bridge duties, without these guys we couldn’t race.
FOOTNOTE - anyone taking offence to any of the above please refer to the clubs lawyers, Chatem, Cheetem and Run, www.chatem.cheetem.run.co.uk.
Next race 7th June 2009 @ 11:00am those of nervous or sensitive dispositions please take valium. Ultra long range forecast gives NNW 2knots, sun and 64 degrees, look out it’s 1 design weather again!
