Mad Sunday or normal sunday mad race! 07-06-09

Posted By admin on June 7, 2009

Sunday dawned with a gentle 7kts of NNE breeze quickly luring the CDMYC sailers into a false sense of security however as the breeeze filled so did the casualty rate with first JC in the Laser and BH in the Laser II deciding there was too much wind to race without a dedicated safety boat.
After the start gun JQ in Dilemma immediatly re-considered his tacktick of letting Cringle helm as they jumped the start and had to recover their positiion, first to the Bell was Dilemma closely followed by the Jag 21 of Tom Nicholl, rounding with a resounding CLANG, that’ll be a firm hit on the Bell and an attempt to move it 500yds seawards. NOTE; H&S requirements for future races “in the vicinity of Tuvag wear ear defenders” which also covers the language as his crew threw the only winch handle overboard (that’ll be REX Nelson). Note - I seem to remember a similar tale from Carlingford Regatta ‘94 (BOOTLEGGER - Sigma 38) but far be it from me to spread rumours

Usual course of Triangle, Sausage, Triangle saw Dilemma romp away with the Jaguar following 8 minutes behind and the COD of Brian Forster behind that. Whilst all of the COD’s racing took water JQ snr, with the smaller jib, sailed a typically controlled and balanced race never looking under pressure but always looking quick and nicey balanced. NB May be worth looking into these so called “1 designers”

Pretty stiff conditions as the wind increased to 23 knots with the COD’s taking water but at least it washed the cobwebs out of the bilges.

Full results on the results page, but in true PY handicap terms you don’t have to be quick just sail to your handicap ……………….. well done Jim, in a Leisure 17.

Leisure 17’s as a new design in the late 70’s sailed across the Atlantic, a brisk day in the Irish Sea is no contest, if you sail it’s arse off and better than your handicap you’ll win, irrespective of how much you spend on the boat!

Thanks for the posted comment Ron even insults show someone reads the page!

Went to read about the author and came up with a great big nothing - just about right I’d say, keep up the good work!

Point of order: Tuvaq was actually the first boat at the Bell when it unprovacatively leapt out and struck her. Dilemma was some way behind, no doubt as a result of poor helming at the start. I understand that comments about the crew are currently in the hands of advocates.

  3. tom says:

p.s. None of Tuvaq’s crew was onboard Bootlegger in that particular year so I suspect “false memory syndrome” and subliminated guilt

  4. Mike says:

Wish I’d been there….. keep up this good work John….it’s good to have a completely different angle on the club……..motor boys ought to respond as well……
