Jack Hill-Heaton Memorial Race, 20-06-09

Posted By admin on June 20, 2009

Ok, Saturday morning’s fine for a race. WNW 4-5 (20-25mph) is ok for all those sitting in their boats but a bit brisk for those sitting on them. But an 08:30 start, come on guys this is seriously early and dam cold when you get you’re first ducking 5 minutes after the start! However, this was a very poor turnout of only 6 boats for what is one of the 2 premier memorial races held by the club and considering we had a new convert in Roger in the Drascombe Lugger taking part for the first time we only had 5 regulars.

The race start was a fairly sedate departure with the six boats running towards the Bell, the laser of JC made the early pace and quickly opened a significant lead over Mike’s Fulmar, Shearwater, with the only regular Castletown 1 design of Brian closely following. Just slightly behind came Jim in the Leisure 17, Adam in the Crabber and Roger in the extremly pretty looking Drascombe in full sail. Conditions changed halfway down this first leg as all the boats cleared the wind shadow of the Town. At the Bell it was certainly fresh and as the laser eased away to a full fast run, gybed and it was ducking time! In typical CDMYC form both Mike and Brian sailed through to take first and second on the water opening a lead of about 100 yds on the laser now back up and shaking water off. Next round the Bell was Jim and Adam but fairly closely shadowed by Roger.

This and the next leg to the start were certainly brisk, Mike made the decision to close haul towards the College but Brian and John, who were back together on the water, decided to tack in a header back into the Bay, not a good move as they’d lost out significantly to the Fulmar at the next rounding. The following three quickly caught on to this and held their course towards the promenade before tacking for the mark. During the next three legs the laser made ground on Mike but the ever present Brian, sailing a very controlled race, kept in touch. Wind freshened for the last Triangle and at the Bell it was business as usual, Mike rounding, gybing and powering away, the laser bearing away onto a run, gybing, over onto the centre board, back right way up and carry on racing. Brian just did what he does best and kept the boat speed up. Very fast reach to Sandwick and a very tricky beat to home in some nasty gusts through the gaps in the houses (laser wrong way up again on this last leg!) these conditions suited the big Fulmar who powered away to the finish for line honours, second was the laser with a very damp helm, third was Brian in Amy, then Jim in the Leisure, Adam in the Crabber and Roger just a couple of minutes behind in the Drascombe, considering this boat has a loose footed main a very good sail in the conditons.

But it’s handicaps that count and the crown this year goes to Mike in the Fulmar with with Brian second and Jim in the Leisure third. Full results on the results page.

Special thanks to Geoff and Anne Spence for OOD duties, saying on the result sheet the conditions were “good”!!!!!! Also Tony for (very early and out of hours) Bridge duty.

No tails this time only me, 4th place, 3 dips, but at least when i’d capsized this time no one following tried to run me over (Pollard).

Those sharp readers will notice the reults have changed and this is due to having Mike’s wrong handicap, the Westerly Fulmar is 1016 however he has declared to Mick Kneale of IOMYC no downwind sails and a three blade prop ref e-mail from M Kneale to M Pollard below;

Hi Mike
Re: your enquiry of the PN of the Westerly Fulmar

Standard RYA Trial number (2009) is 1016 - this is with folding prop and spinnaker
In your case:
ibf to ib3 adds 3% and no downwind sails adds another 4%
so:- 1016 x 1.07 = 1087
Seems about right to me on the face of it.
Cheers
Mick
