Sunday 6th September - Race 9

Posted By admin on September 7, 2009

Spot on forecast and race prediction, 20+ knots, big sea and the two heavy weights going head to head.  Lovely conditions in the harbour but once outside things changed dramatically, and a day the COD’s decided discretion was the order of the day, with Brian in Amy and Keith in RosieB having a brief trip into the bay and a planing return into harbour that was enough for them.  News of this quickly spread to JQ senior in WildWave who decided not to bother racing but to try and knock pieces off the Bollan Rock next to the Nautical Museum, sure it will have been the crew’s fault.

This left five boats to take to the line, the Delta, Fulmar, Leisure17, Hurley and the Swift.  From the off the Fulmar of Mike Pollard and Delta of JohnQ  went neck and neck to the Bell, with the Swift, the Hurley and the Leisure in pursuit.  A neat pirouette from the Delta after rounding the Bell let Mike sneak the lead from Q but by the first sausage leg they were both back to neck and neck.  Further back the Hurley again showed her stability in a blow whilst the two smaller lighter boats had a bit of a bumpy ride and in some instance a fairly wet one.

On the last triangle a mistake by Mike allowed Q to get ahead and push hard on the last legs giving him line honours by 42 seconds.  Further back the Swift clung on to 3rd on the water followed by the Hurley and Leisure both being sailed single handed by Tony and Jim.

……………….. and the next race is two weeks time on the 20th with a 12:00 start.  As usual check the links for the latest weather predictions.

Thanks to Mike Williams for OOD duties on what must have been a pretty grim stint on the end of the pier.

Not too grim on the pier end…but thanks for the thanks. Plenty of company from John Hellowell, Nev, Juan et all, plus help from a visiting UK friend made it a very enjoyable experience. Plenty of crack between the two John’s in the Glue Pot afterwards as well……
