Race 10 Sunday 20th September
Posted By admin on September 20, 2009
Following from the comments in the last log book today was obviously a day when all those afraid of a puff of wind came out, not surprisingly seeing there was only 8kts S’Westerly. In total 11 boats came to the line and as everyone did the usual dodging around pre start there was a tangible edge to proceedings as the infamous RB in Subtle appeared for the race, never a man to take your eye off as you could find 30ft of boat climbing over your deck with the skipper oblivious to all. However, for this race the dodgem trophy went to a surprising winner in Mike Pollard, guest helm on Tamarind, who smoothly tacked straight into Jim in his Leisure 17, forcing both to retire and dropping the numbers to 9 racers. Look on the bright side Jim, he could have been in 32 feet and about four and a half ton of Fulmar and that would have hurt! Comisserations Tony and we hope to see you (helming) for the last two races.
Now back to the race. From the off the Delta of JQ, skippered today by Hannah as Q’s at the boat show (wait for it next year, it’s going to be bigger and faster!) moved straight into the lead followed by the Nicholson of Richard, the Jaguar,of Tom and the everpresent COD of Brian snapping at their heels. As the fleet spread out the Crabber of Adam looked to be sailing well above it’s hull speed, maybe had something to do with Margaret being on board today keeping the crew on the pace?
After the first two legs Brian was well up with two bigger boats but taking a decision to stay inshore on the leg to the pier mark possibly cost him a little time with some strange knocks making the leg difficult. By the start of the last triangle the Delta had established a significant lead on the water followed by the Nicholson, Jaguar and COD but with a slight wind change the final leg proved to be a straight beat to wind to finish. The Delta took line honours in 55 minutes and 7 seconds, however Tom in the Jaguar wasn’t for giving up and an exceptionally tight and well sailed beat on the final leg saw him overhaul the Nich for second place in 66min 39sec, next the Nich 21seconds behind and the COD 20 seconds behind that. However this only gives the picture at the front and there was obviously some very good sailing in the middle of the fleet from Peter in his COD Joan and Adam in the Crabber, Wombat, both playing the dark horse card very well today.
