Do I smell Spring/Summer coming?

The days are stretching and that time of year when nautical mishaps become second nature looms large on the horizon.  The racing schedule is updated on the planner and it looks like the championship will be decided over 12 races with 2 discards.  Individual races accompanying these are the usual two prestigious memorial races and the longer race to PSM.  But who’s going to be the bookies favourite?  Ever consistent Brian in Amy will definitely be there and the one to sink beat but JQ (Captain Nose) in the Delta could be hard on his heels.  Rumours of not only new sails but new Pentex sails for the Delta coupled to last year’s learning curve could make him the dark horse.  However his nemesis the basking shark could lure him like a siren away from serious racing.

But never a done deal sailing and there’s a significant fleet chasing these two, Peter HH in Joan, Mike Q in Raven, JQ snr in Wildwave (crew selection is usually his biggest handicap)  Tom N in Tuvag definitely showed pace last year and if he keeps the same crew will challenge for the cruiser class and potentially the big prizes.  Young Ben in the Laser II could feature but a light dinghy is ruled by weather conditions.  But the dark horse in the wings, not appearing last year but definitely worth a speculative bet is Nev in Margaret which is one Pageant that can really show a clean stern to the fleet.  But no mention of Mike in Shearwater, well rumour has it cruising calls this year and he’ll be reduced to first mate as “she who must be obeyed” takes charge, but a good bet for the individual races.

………….. and i know i’ve missed people, the spaniards, Tony in Seletar II. Tony in Tamarind, Mike in Sorcery and John D in Popard good place bets in heavy weather.  More locals; Adam in Wombat, a good bet for the open class, JimE in Fiesta, although he may struggle being off the fixed handicap this year and last but not least Rex is rumoured to be taking to the seas again - if it still floats!
