Race 2

Another flukey day in Castletown Bay saw 8 boats take to the water, with a poor show from the Spaniards it was left to Mike in the Fulmar, Shearwater, to fight for honours against the seven locals.  After a blistering start from Rupert Bear, 5 seconds before the gun they had a bit of a chase to catch the fleet after their recall as all headed to the Bell, at the first rounding Dilemma took the lead with the mighty Shearwater close on their heels, third round was Rupert Bear closely followed by new competitor Mark Quayle in his Topper Xenon, with Mike in Raven, Tom in Tuvag, Brian in Amy and Adam in Wombat, who had to hastily shake out the 7 reefs he had in as the wind fell light.  The next legs saw a pretty tight tussle between the 2 Delta’s and the Fulmar with the lead position changing regularly between Shearwater and Dilemma, Mark held his forth position but got little opportunity to pop the asymetric for that little extra power, sailing a fairly lonely race was Tuvag with the two COD’s and Wombat having a reasonably close sail further back.  On the final Triangle a bit of colour was unleashed with both Delta’s flying marginal kites and the Topper its asymentric, however even without a spinnaker the Fulmar kept pace rounding third close behind Rupert who’s bow was only feet off the transom of Dilemma.  This penultimate leg proved the killer, Rupert got a degree higher on the beat than Dilemma and rounded the mark to start the last leg 20yds ahead, with Shearwater another 20 yards behind Dilemma.  It was evident one mistake would prove costly but after a tense leg the finishing order was unchanged.  With Mark in the Topper fourth, and Tuvag, Amy, Raven and Wombat close behind it was a quick race.  But things are never straight forward sailing.  Full results after handicap are on the results page but it’s worth mentioning only 2.5 minutes covered the first and last boats after the handicap had been applied and it goes to show sail well and you win.  It could be a close season!  Good to see the Grumpy Old Men team back on Rupert.

As ever thanks to (Rex) Admiral Nelson for very chilly OOD duties, good job there’s a bit of padding there to keep the cold out and Tony for bridge duties.
