Race 5 - Sun, Sea ………….wind and waves.
Posted By admin on June 27, 2010
Race 5 saw near perfect conditions with a moderate to fresh breeze and the sun just breaking through, 9 boats lined up with the Topper, Cod’s and Esk all opting for reefs in the main. With the usual Castletown fixed course it was strange to have a beat to the first mark and this made for some tactical decisions with most opting to be close hauled into the Bay whilst only Rupert Bear close hauled out of the Bay. After all the tacking decisons were made Rupert Bear rounded first, PMT second, Tuvag third and Amy fourth with Raven, Wombat, Rosie B, Seletar II (on their first outing this year) but Esk decided the conditions were too frisky around the Bell with the usual big rollers and headed back into port. Rupert and PMT launched spinnakers on the leg to Sandwick and were rewarded with some good planing off the waves. Tuvag and the rest of the fleet were goose winged on the run and kept in touch with the leaders. On this leg Amy opened a gap on the following fleet and looked to be making ground in an effort to haul back the leaders. As we rounded the top mark of the sausage we met Raven as he rounded and were presented with an excellent sight as Mike pushed his COD hard to the harbour mark, unfortunately with a little too much sail and having shipped a bit of water over the gunwhale he decided water ballast wasn’t a good design mod and went into port. The leaders all headed towards Scarlett before tacking for the Bell and rounding for the run to Sandwick, a rather undignified kite hoist by Rupert allowed PMT to close the gap and after rounding for the final leg it was bow to transom but Rupert solidly maintained the lead to take line honours by the slimmest of margins. Nearly a leg behind came Tuvag, then Amy in fourth who remains the class act of the COD’s, a further 8 minutes back saw Wombat and Rosie B and finally Seletar II closed proceedings.

Thanks to John Moon for yet again OOD and safety boat duties, he’s getting to be a fixture on the pier at races and also Tony for swinging the Bridge.
