Race 6 - Plenty of bottoms exposed

Posted By admin on July 11, 2010

This one was doomed from the start, blustery 20 - 25 knots, late out of the harbour and lovely big confused seas at the Bell Buoy.  With only Shearwater, Dilemma, Rupert Bear and PMT deciding to sail it was never going to be a spectacle in the Bay but as the sun came out things looked a little better.   With Rupert Bear having a few issues with the reefing lines and hoisting the Genoa they headed back into the start line to be promtly passed by the three others coming the opposite way having already started!  Shearwater plowed ahead with Dilemma in close company and Mike and Peter in the Xenon  following behind, for Rupert Bear’s pair (Grumpy and Grumpier) it was a case of where the hell did those three go.  At the Bell it was inches to spare with Shearwater rounding first from Dilemma but on the run to Sandwick the Delta with a full suit of sails up showed her downwind planing power passing to take the lead.  The leg back to the harbour was a good old bone jarring beat but this leg allowed Rupert to claw back yards on the Topper helped by the guys state of the art capsize, obviously pretty cold water as no sooner was it over than it was back up again.

The Race split into 2 against 2 with Dilemma and Shearwater battling at the front and Rupert and PMT  having a tussle at the rear, with the highlights of the last lap being some spectacular surfing conditions on the final Bell Buoy Sandwick leg it made it all worth while.

Finishing positions were Dilemma, Shearwater, PMT and Rupert with only 6 minutes seperating first from last, as usual check the results page for the corrected positions.

The “Man-up and sail it’s not too windy” trophy goes to Mark and Peter in the Topper, as the smallest boat in the whole club fleet they put others to shame.

Thanks to Anne and Geoff for OOD duties and I’m sure Neville’s knees with loosen up by next weeks race.
