Race 13 Sunday 2nd October

Posted By admin on October 2, 2011

Lovely conditions, 12kts ssw, fairly lumpy seas, very warm and clammy and good old rain!  Five took to the line and with one of the first real beats for the first leg it was improtant to get a good start.  O’hara of Scarlett led off the line with Rupert a few yeards behind and to wind, Dilemma next a good few yards behind then Tuvag and Dulcibella.  At the Bell it was virtually side by side for O’hara and Rupert with the run to Sandwick letting Rupert get their nose ahead, Dilemma had a storming run to get alongside O’hara and after rounding the mark overtook O’hara to leeward.  With Tuvag rounding fourth this set the procession for the rermainder of the race with the two Delta’s opening a gap on the Beneteau.  Once the four cruisers finished Dulcibella retired on the last leg of their sausage.

Thanks to Mary and Alan for very damp OOD duties.

Results are on the results tab for today’s race, well done Polly perfect day to unleash the power of the Fulmar, could have been even quicker if the mainsheet hadn’t jammed!

The dreaded countdown is on, only three races left for this season and that’ll be it for another controversial year.

Race 10 - The curse of the yellow spot

Posted By admin on August 14, 2011

Perfect sailing conditions, fairly quick race and the OOD pulled a masterfull stunt in displaying the Yellow Disc at the end of the last leg signifying an extended race, great shame only 4 crews remembered the rule and 9 didn’t.  Never had a DNF before!  Of those four (with elephantine memories) Mike Pollard took line honours, followed by Mark in O’hara, PJ (or should it be allie as it looked like professional helming?) in Idiyot and Tony G in Seletar.  For full results follow the usual tab.

Usual tales of little bumps and scrapes, racing marks didn’t escape the odd pressure test from passing boats but all in all a successfull race.  Mark also unveiled the latest high aspect narrow waisted assymetric.

Results catch-up

Apologies for the delay, results are now up for the Creggen Cup and the Jack Hill-Heaton single handed Cup.

2 Day Regatta 16th & 17th July.

Day 1; good sailing conditions on the first day with 18 - 24kts @ 250 deg would mean fast sailing but tactical decisions on the leg to the harbour mark.  Of the 18 starters it was always going to be a Fuit and Nut Case day with the flyinh 1720 leading the fleet home.

Day 2; how things changed with 7 gusting 9 and an interesting sea, only consolation was it wasn’t SW but remained in the West giving “relatively” flat seas.  Numbers were significantly down from the previous day but that Fruit and Nut case did the business for the second time, slightly bigger crew but certainly  neccessary in the stronger conditions as they showed the rest of the fleet the way home.

Race 8 03-07-11

The 8th race of CDMYC’s season was held in surprisingly summer conditions of 4-6kts of SE breeze and unbroken sunshine.  Thirteen boats took the line and with the light conditions slowing boat handling it caught a number of the competitors out with the traditonal calls for water echoing round the Pier.  These were followed by the dulcit tones of she who must be obeyed (the OOD) informing Amy they were well over the line!

Unsurprisingly Amy led the fleet away to the Bell with strangely Dilemma slow to cross and 50 yds adrift.  Halfway down the leg Rupert passed Amy with O’hara close behind, the next bunch were Castletown One Designs (COD’s) with Shearwaterand Tuvag mixing it in (not the day for the heavier Fulmar) with Wombat, SeletarII and the irrepressible ESK sporting her full suit of sails including topsail completing the pack.

At the Bell after a “close” tacking encounter Rupert rounded first from O’hara with Dilemma having had a scorching first leg back in contention third.  Next came the COD fleet, Tuvag, Shearwater, Wombat, Seletar and ESK.  Unfortunatley this wasn’t going to be a race for the spectators as the line looked to be firmly established, the only slight excitement was on the sausage leg to Sandwick, Dilemma sailed straight over Rupert as if they were stopped to take the lead by 10 yds.  There were some peculiar tackticks from Wombat and ESK on a couple of the legs but failed to gain position.

For full results follow the usual tab and regarding Wombat’s and ESK’s different “tackticks” they resulted in ESK taking the prize ……………… they had 5 Callig and 1 Mackerel, Wombat had 4 Callig and 1 Mackerel!  The only speculation left was did dehydration strike SeletarII forcing their retirement?

Thanks to Margaret for stepping into the OOD duties.

Race 7 19-06-11

Posted By admin on June 19, 2011

Well guy’s here we are nearly half way through the Championship at race 7 and two days off the longest day, it’s all downhill from now, so we need to make the most of it!  We did see the biggest fleet of the season on a day that promised lot’s with a steady 14kts but didn’t deliver as the wind backed slightly and eased.  From the off it was definitely looking like a big boat day with Mike’s Fulmar showing her stern to the fleet on the first leg to the Bell.  Next up was Rupert Bear with Dilemma virtually alongside and Scarlett making up the four who began to open a gap on the rest of the fleet.  A good showing of 5 One Designs would always make for a tight group and some tight racing  in the middle of the fleet but with Juan only launching 5 days earlier and out for his first sail maybe not a contender this week.  But lets not forget the remaining three competitors who should never be overlooked, Tuvag with their secret Rex on board, Tony in Seletar and Adam in Wombat would always mix it given half a chance and all had the potential to disrupt the final results.

On the long run down to Sandwick, Mike managed to keep the lead but the two Delta’s were certainly up for a challenge.  After a slight skirmish on the mark and a bit if vocal Dilemma emerged slightly in the lead and rounded the harbour mark first with Rupert second and Shearwater and Scarlett in close company in third and fourth with neither giving an inch.  On the one design front the unstoppable Wildwave of JQ snr with his young crew looked to have the legs on the other 3 as he held onto fifth spot overall, with Amy, Rosie B and Joan following in procession.  A late entry in Fugitive from PSM was hastily bringing up the rear and trying to overhaul the backmarkers.

Slight drama after the first Triangle with Tuvag dropping sails and heading into port, second race, second problem, could it have anything to do with having a Rex on board?  We hope to bring you more news but the only info available is a keel problem requiring the skipper to go overboard for a swim to inspect the hull.  As this was in the confines of the harbour he’s currently having the full range of Hepatitus jabs and an anti-Rexanus innoculation.  Times like this you realise the benefits of being a non swimmer!

Back to the race; the procession was now set for the rest of the race with the two Delta’s leading the fleet with Dilemma having a gap of around 50 yards over Rupert and definitely not going to relinquish it easily, the fight for third and fourth looked to be the excitement of the race between the heavy Fulmar having the edge on the wind but the slippery hulled Scarlett capitalising off the wind.  The one design group stayed in close company all race with the group of Seletar, Wombat and Fugitive closing proceedings, Juan in Alice and Lilly retired but achieved their objective in getting everything sorted and all the spiders out of the sails.

Quick race, with the winner on the water, Dilemma, completing the course in just over  54 minutes, but would that be good enough and with 21 seconds between third and fourth who would get it?  Next back Wildwave 12 seconds ahead of Amy with Rosie B and Joan a further few minutes off the pace.  For full results check the results tab.

Thanks to Mike and Evelyn for OOD duties and as always Tony for swinging the bridge.

Race Sunday 19th

Posted By admin on June 16, 2011

Provisional information is the pursuit race has been replaced by a normal race due to it being part of the overall championship.  The plan will be to schedule a single pursuit race as a one off later in the season.

Also with regard to any boat having a Rex on board, there won’t be a handicap adjustment as long as it’s kept down below and not exhibited on deck.  Boats will also be expected to return to port with their Rex on board as leaving them in the bay may constitute a hazard to navigation.

Race 6 and Mad Sunday

Posted By admin on June 5, 2011

Whilst it may have been Mad Sunday on the Island for all the visiting bikers it was a show of bottoms for the yacht race in Castletown, check the photos tab.  Wonderfull sailing weather, gentle 15 - 18knots Easterly just giving a few white horses, otherwise superb flat water and glorious sunshine made for a lovely sail round the cans.  We’re into June so a plague of One Designs ventured from the middle harbour for the race, and after some tactical crew transfers (we hear any transfer fees paid are unfortunately covered by a super injunction ) made the start line.  From the off Rupert Bear stuck her nose in front but on the first fetch to the Bell they were closely followed by Amy, Wombat, Esk, Talisker, Rosie B and the inimitable JQ senior in Wild Wave.   Everyone in the club and racing welcomes our newest club member Mike Newby in his very smartly presented Southerly 33 to the racing fold at Castletown.  One non-starter was Tuvag having a few “technical” problems with those white things and no it wasn’t Rex, but once they did come out showed some impressive speed sailing round the Bay.  Definitely one to watch in the coming races.

At the first rounding it was definitely a tight beat to Sandwick with those failing to hold the lay line knocked way off and having to make some quick tacks, Esk had some interesting moves on this leg but damn it did look good!  Rupert Bear rounded first and it was obvious they weren’t going to relinquish this position, Talisker was second, however the battle for third place was a far more serious one and in the words of that immortal footballing legend Bill Shankly “life and death……….. it’s far more serious than that”.  The third place position changed after each leg and i’m sure the sopectators on the Pier had money on Amy to win the tussle of the COD’s but check the results page for the final placings.  Talisker showed her speed holding onto second place on the water just failing to claw Rupert’s lead back, the battling COD’s were next with Wombat and Esk completing the race.  Excellent sailing day and one definitely not to have your boat left in the harbour.

Thanks as ever to Tony for Bridge duties and Margaret for the chilly OOD duties on the end of the pier.

Club Race 5 29-05-11

Posted By admin on May 29, 2011

After bleary eyed preparations in the middle harbour at 07:30 for the 08:30 start it proved to be a perfect sailing day with winds of 22kts - 28kts and some lovely white curly ones on the first Mark.  Only three competitors weren’t put off by the time and typically it was the usual suspects; with an even earlier start from PSM, Mike and Alan in Shearwater, JQ with more new crew in Dilemma, and Rupett Bear nearly upto full crew strength with the return of the wandering South African.  All Rupert needs now is Gemma and that’ll pull the average age well down from their current lofty heights!

Extremely difficult to hear the start sequence hooter with the strength of wind and rigging noise masking it but Shearwater not to be outdone came off the line like a greyhound and threw the gauntlet down to the Delta’s.  Rupert gave chase with Dilemma after a small curtsey and pirouette to the crowd decided to start as well.  At the Bell Buoy Shearwater held a 20yd lead over Rupert with Dilemma another 20 yds back, the down wind blast to Sandwick was exhilarating surfing on the monster rollers and it made up for the full speed gybe at the Bell.  The beat from Sandwick looked to be the crucial legs and was definitely going to be the battle between heavy boat, bilge keels and and light boat fin keel.  Considering there were three of these legs it could favour the fin keelers.

Starting the last Triangle, Shearwater still held the 20yds lead and slightly extended it to the last Bell Buoy rounding but a slighlty more wider route to Sandwick allowed Rupert, closer to the lay line, to close the gap.  After two very slick and tight roundings from the front runners it was evident that Rupert yet again held a higher course than the Bilge keeler and with Shearwater forced to make a small tack for the mark it allowed Rupert to cross first 51 secs ahead of Shearwater.  Dilemma finshed third after what appeared to be some very interesting heavy weather “manoeuvres”  (might need new crew again next week as this weeks have been scared off).  Tough day for helms with Rupert Bear’s coming off straight away and heading back to bed after declaring they were on the limit with full main and blade!

For full results follow the results link.  Thanks to Graham Mcfee for very early OOD duties and also assisting the Harbour Keeper in opening and closing the bridge.
